They're always self-mailers, and as such must follow the requisite postal rules and regulations before even beginning to achieve their intended purpose:to reach a target audience and pass on information. Postcards make great messengers because they are a particularly non-threatening piece of mail to receive. Their strength lies in that space is limited so the message must be concise. The information can generally be absorbed without the effort of opening, unfolding or reading big chunks of copy. They're quick and painless the fast food drive-through of mail. That's the good news. The bad news is that they have the potential to be swiftly looked over and forgotten. We like postcards as self-promotion because they can be very inexpensive yet effective. Inexpensive because we don't do mass mailings, so our cards are usually hand-made and personalized for each recipient. And if the postcard is well-designed, the likelihood increases that it will be saved from immediate residency in the recycling bin. You won't find any resumes decorating the walls of big-time art directors;postcards at least hold that possibility. Self-promo postcards offer the design freedom that is sometimes missing when desiging for clients. Some clients see postcards as nothing more than little vehicles for words:design is not an issue. Between these "word cards" and "self-promo postcards" is a very large grey area where a designer's judgement regarding design appropriateness comes into play. It is satisfying to be able to make stylistic personal statements while simultaneously serving clients' needs. As in all areas of design, sometimes style overshadows content, sometimes style enhances content, and sometimes style IS the content. When working with clients, we always shoot for the latter two. In the following pages you'll find a wide range of design and client problems and a wide range of solutions. Although this book contains hundreds of examples, it is only a very small part of the entire postcard world.
