A modern person would answer: the creation of the Slavic alphabet and the baptism of Rus'. Yet, not a single Byzantine source from the 9th century mentions Cyril and Methodius, just as not a single Greek living in the 10th century left us a single line about the baptism of Prince Vladimir. This "silence of the century" cannot be accidental, especially since it accompanies many other Byzantine missionary endeavors: in Ethiopia, Arabia, and Persia. This reveals a fundamental difference in the medieval Greeks' perception of the world and themselves. This monograph is dedicated to revealing this specificity. For the first time in world scholarship, it traces the history of Byzantine missionary activity throughout its entire thousand-year span. The author examines in detail all the Christianizing endeavors of the Greeks, many of which have until now eluded scholars. For the first time, the Greek Orthodox mission is examined not only from the perspective of the "missioned" (what role did it play in the history of Christianity in a given country?), but also from the perspective of the missionary (why did the Byzantines need to convert "barbarians"?). The author seeks to answer the main question: could a "barbarian" even become a Christian in the minds of Byzantines? The Empire lost the peaceful competition for Croatia, the Czech Republic, Bosnia, Lithuania, Khazaria, Hungary, and the North Caucasus to its confessional rivals - why? N° de réf. du vendeur jhj506
