Jakob Steiner (18March 1796 - 1 April 1863) was a Swiss mathematician. He was born in thevillage of Utzenstorf, Canton of Bern. At eighteen he became a pupil ofHeinrich Pestalozzi, and afterwards studied at Heidelberg. Thence hewent to Berlin, earning a livelihood there, as in Heidelberg, bytutoring. Here he became acquainted with A. L. Crelle, who, encouragedby his ability and by that of N. H. Abel, then also staying at Berlinfounded his famous Journal (1826). After Steiner's publication (1832) ofhis Systematische Entwickelungen he received, through C. G. J. Jacobiwho was then professor at Königsberg University, an honoranry degreethere; and through the influence of Carl Gustav Jacob Jacobi and of thebrothers Alexander and Wilhelm von Humboldt a new chair of geometry wasfounded for him at Berlin (1834).
