Synopsis

After the economic crisis of 2008, the ore market has been in a continuous depressed cycle and the freight rates have been driven under the break-even rates lowering vessels incomes. In this aspect, to comply with the regulations imposed by the IMO and to tackle with the burdens of the market shipowners and operators of capesize ore carrier have the option to retrofit or newbuild vessels with dual-fuel engines operating with LNG as alternative propulsion system. On the other hand, the LNG availability as bunkers is a key aspect in the viability plan of the use of LNG as fuel. In order to evaluate the commercial implications of the use of LNG as fuel for capesize ore carriers, main technical aspects of retrofitting and newbuilding are to be evaluated along with the cost of the investment, enhanced by the voyage operational cost differential on using LNG as fuel and shipowners and operators opinion on the success of the LNG propulsion system implementation.
