Biochemical abnormalities are frequent in neonatal seizures. This study showed male predominance of neonatal seizures. There is no difference in incidence of biochemical abnormalities in males and females. Transient biochemical disturbances occurred in 16% of cases without comorbidities. Hypocalcemia followed by Hypoglycemia are frequent biochemical abnormalities in this study. In 60% of cases biochemical abnormalities are associated with other comorbid conditions. These biochemical abnormalities may contribute notably to seizure activity and correction of these abnormalities may play important role in control of seizures. A biochemical workup is essential in all neonatal seizure cases. The type of seizure is not correlating with etiology or type of biochemical abnormality. Outcome is strongly associated with etiological factors. All transient metabolic abnormality cases had normal neurodevelopmental outcome.
