La voie de Hexamine à HMX est longue et comprend de nombreux composés intermédiaires. Le dinitrate d'hexamine et le dinitropentaméthylène tétramine (DPT) sont deux de ces intermédiaires. La solubilité limitée des intermédiaires mentionnés ci-dessus affaiblit l'applicabilité des modèles cinétiques ordinaires du premier et du deuxième ordre à l'étape de décomposition dans laquelle le Dinitrate d'hexamine a été converti en DPT. Le coefficient de corrélation avec l'ajustement du premier ordre était légèrement supérieur à celui correspondant à l'ajustement du deuxième ordre. Ce résultat signifie que la réaction mentionnée est probablement de premier ordre, mais l'ajustement a dû être refait selon les modèles fluide-particules afin de prendre en compte l'hétérogénéité du mélange étudié. Les modèles cinétiques contrôlant la diffusion n'étaient pas très cohérents avec les résultats expérimentaux.
