Among the many remarkable personalities that emerged in Ancient Greece, none has exerted as lively a fascination as that of Alexander III (356–323 BCE), king of Macedon, most commonly known as Alexander the Great. He was called ‘the Great’ for the breadth of his conquests, the young age at which he accomplished them, and the immeasurable impact they have had on history. This is his life as recounted by the prominent Greek philosopher and historian Plutarch in the first century CE.

Greek historian PLUTARCH was born shortly before 50 CE in the small city of Chaeronia in Boeotia (Central Greece). He came from a prosperous family and studied in Athens, at Plato’s Academy. He travelled extensively in Greece, visited Alexandria in Egypt and regions of Asia Minor, and spent time in Rome, where he became friendly with illustrious Roman senators. Returning to Chaeronia he married, started a family, and assumed local public office in several capacities. He also became a priest of Apollo at the Oracle of Delphi. He was a prolific author and, in his time, was already acknowledged as a historian, philosopher, and biographer. His most important works are Parallel Lives and Moralia. He died in 120 CE, or shortly after.
Panagiotis Stavropoulos (b. 1962) is a painter and iconographer. He studied painting and engraving at the Gerrit Rietvelt Academy in Amsterdam, and has painted icons and frescoes in churches around Greece. From 1996 to 2014 he lived on the island of Tinos, where he focused mainly on sculpture. His work has been presented in solo exhibitions in Athens and Tinos. Panagiotis has also participated in several group exhibitions, and his artwork features on numerous covers of the Modern Greek Classics series of Aiora Press.
