Synopsis

Stephanos's writing is enveloped in an aura - one that is sometimes light and fluid and sometimes dense like crowded memory. In his poetry, he consciously employs polysemic diction, alliteration, iconopoeia and selective rhyme in order to narrate the tangible, but even more, to allude to the other-worldly, the place "beyond life's certainties." Within his verbal universe, we encounter words in the Cypriot dialect, from English poetry, from Spanish Golden Age theatre, along with words from ancient Greek, Turkish, Latin, Portuguese, Sanskrit, and other languages. His grandmothers' sibyllic speech in the prose pieces is peppered with quotes from W. H. Auden, Derek Walcott, Ovid, Calderon - as well as Cavafy, if only by osmosis.
