Synopsis
La demande sans précédent de capacité de réseau optique a alimenté le développement de systèmes de réseau optique long-courrier qui utilisent le multiplexage en longueur d'onde (WDM) pour atteindre d'énormes capacités. Ces systèmes transportent des dizaines à des centaines de longueurs d'onde par fibre, avec chaque longueur d'onde modulée à 10 Go/s ou plus [1]. La charge de commutation dans ces systèmes a été imposée presque entièrement sur l'électronique. Dans chaque nœud de commutation, les signaux optiques sont convertis en signaux électriques (conversion O-E), mis en mémoire tampon électroniquement, puis transmis à leur prochain saut après avoir été convertis à nouveau en forme optique (conversion E-O).
