La question des terres a été très importante pour le développement rural de la Chine. Cette étude examine la question foncière en Chine et examine si la privatisation de la propriété foncière collective de la Chine pourrait être une solution. Il offre aux lecteurs le contexte historique de la question foncière chinoise de 1949 à 1978, donnant des comptes détaillés des politiques foncières du Parti communiste chinois (PCC) de la réforme foncière à la collectivisation puis à la décollectivisation, en particulier comment le PCC a progressivement transformé la propriété foncière privée en une propriété collective. Le cadre théorique de la « contre-action » des paysans est utilisé pour analyser le comportement des paysans qui ont interagi avec le PCC et ont finalement influencé les politiques du PCC avant et après 1978. Il aborde le thème de la privatisation des terres et présente différentes opinions et arguments sur une possible privatisation des terres en Chine, suivies d'analyses pour savoir si la privatisation profiterait aux paysans, ce qui fait ressortir une conclusion que la privatisation des terres en Chine pourrait bénéficier aux paysans d'une manière mais ne résout pas nécessairement tous les problèmes auxquels les paysans chinois sont confrontés.
