The first six papers were written by E. O. Willis: the first three papers were the conclusion he attained by studying books and skeletons of vertebrates for his zoology classes. The next two papers present the results of his studies in the forests not far from Rio Claro, and thus he could visit frequently (Itirapina and Fazenda São José). Rio Claro is the city, where we set our home, after he was appointed professor at the State University of São Paulo (Universidade Estadual Paulista “Julio de Mesquita Filho”) in 1982. In the sixth paper, E. O. Willis gives emphasis to the need for natural corridors in order to maintain animal movements and biodiversity. The last 2 papers were already published in 1982 in Portuguese but the manuscripts were mixed up and so that made it very difficult to understand them. Thus, we present here an English version of them.
