This book is about a unique study that was undertaken with the objectives of finding out the problems and performance of the scheduled tribe village panchayat presidents in Tamil Nadu apart from their socioeconomic profiles, political linkages, knowledge about roles and responsibilities, as well as their support system. The old traditional system was self sufficient and required no written rules. On the other hand, it did have several demerits. The new system has a binding effect on all the villages and empowers the tribal panchayat presidents with certain powers and responsibilities. A question that requires an answer is; what is their performance like? The objectives of the study are all primarily aimed at answering this burning question. Finally, it is hoped that this book will arise and awake, the spirit of the tribal panchayat presidents to keep working until their goal of empowerment is attained. This was the dream of Swami Vivekananda.

Biographie de l'auteur

V. Sethuramalingam is the Professor & Head at the Department of Social Work, Bharathidasan University, India. He has published books and several research articles in national and international journals, edited many special issues of reputed journals, carried out several research projects on various social issues, and expertly guided PhD scholars.
