Synopsis

Migration is a multidimensional phenomenon of economic and social importance and has significant impacts on sustainable development. Understanding migration patterns is a requirement for effective social and economic policy and programmes. Furthermore, it would shed a light on the keys to a sustainable demographic model combined with well-planned healthy economic growth. Thus, it could also be useful to alleviate certain types of poverty, optimise resource and human capital management etc. At the outset of this paper it is worthwhile to reiterate the call to improve the quality and quantity of the data available to generate information on migration flows and migrant stocks that is important to guide evidence-based policy-making and public debate. Myanmar remains a predominately rural country with among the lowest levels of awareness and use of modern contraceptives. Rapid urbanization, however, is creating often remarkably large gaps between modern contraceptive use in rural and urban areas.
