This book is about a self-reflective study, conducted at Blantyre Teachers Training College in Malawi on how Cooperative Learning Methods could be used in the teaching of Social studies using action research as a tool for self-professional development. Even though the findings are from one college classroom in Malawi, the book has highlighted similar issues in other countries. Among other important issues, this book has covered: -Background to the adoption of learner centred pedagogies (of which cooperative methods belong) in Teacher Training Colleges in Malawi and other countries;-Importance of using Cooperative learning methods in the teaching of Social studies in Malawi and other countries;-Significance of using a self study action research strategy in teaching as a tool for continuous professional development;-Understanding Self study action research, its roots and approaches;-Role of a tutor in classroom implementation of activities;-Role of student teachers in daily classroom activities;-Challenges experienced in the classroom and how they were dealt with-Workability of the action research strategy;The book would be useful to preservice and practicing teachers.
