This work presents a simple and reliable optimization approach to optimally allocate the thyristor-controlled series compensator (TCSC) and unified power flow controller (UPFC) in wind power connected deregulated power system. In the presented approach, only optimal power flow (OPF) formulation of MATPOWER is used and the rest work has been done in the MATLAB coding to develop the proposed approach. The presented approach is based on step by step variation in control parameters of the TCSC and UPFC device. Results have been determined for all possible locations, compensation level, reactance of TCSC and UPFC, reactive power injection or absorption, maximization of social welfare, maximization of profit with minimization of objective function. The locational marginal pricing (LMP) has reduced by proper placement of FACTS devices by presented approach. System voltage also improved by using the UPFC. The double auction bidding model has been used in this work. The effectiveness of the presented approach for optimal location of TCSC & UPFC has been tested and analyzed on modified IEEE 14-bus and modified IEEE 118-bus systems.
