Staphylococcus epidermidis, one of the staphylococcal species most frequently isolated from the microflora of humans, has emerged as a major pathogen in nosocomial infections. Now a days, there is an alarmingly high incidence of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis (MRSE) infections in hospitalized patient and hospital environment. As S. epidermidis especially MRSE are multi-drug resistant and infections are difficult to treat, therefore antibiotic sensitivity must be done prior to treatment in infections caused by Staphylococcus epidermidis. Production of Biofilm is an important virulence factor for Staphylococcus epidermidis. Biofilm production by S. epidermidis can occur on almost any kind of catheter and in a variety of other medical devices and implants. The evaluation of biofilm production although significantly higher in clinical isolates, it can be said that due to some limitations it is not a good indicator of invasive capacity of Staphylococcus epidermidis.
