Since the discovery of cisplatin, a great deal of research has been conducted in the therapeutic application of metal-based complexes. These compounds exhibit ambivalent dispositions: some are associated with induction and progression of cancers, some have demonstrated efficacy in cancer treatment and some display both properties. Despite the challenges emanating from the clinical use of platinum compounds, there is a growing demand for metal-based compounds in cancer therapy. This may be due to the scourge of cancer and, to the greater extent, the level of in vitro cytotoxic effects exhibited by metal-based compounds, particularly those that have been synthesized recently.
