The cutting tool industry is striving towards making tools available to the industry which cost less and perform better. The development in technology has made available sophisticated machines which in controlled environments can produce components of such good finish and dimensional accuracy that subsequent operations like grinding itself can be eliminated. However, such machining is only possible by proper tools. Deviating from the conventional, supported by survey findings, it was felt that cryogenically treated tools could be a solution for the industrial requirement. Cryo treatment involves subject the material to sub zero temperatures. Subjecting to temperatures much below – 110 deg is known as Deep Cryo Treatment. It was found that the cost of this treatment was negligible at a few hundred per tool when compared to the benefits one could reap if found successful in machining. This research was therefore taken up with an objective of ascertaining the effect of using deep cryo-treated Molybdenum M2 tool in machining aluminum AL6351. The study was focused on finding the effect of the treated tool on machining force, machining power, tool tip temperature, surface roughness.
