Synopsis

Expansive soils are highly problematic by virtue of their innate capacity to undergo volume changes consequent upon changes in water content. They swell when they absorb water and shrink when they lose water to the atmosphere. As a result, civil engineering infrastructure founded in these soils get severely distressed. Hence, many innovative foundation techniques have been suggested in order to reduce the volumetric changes of these soils. This monograph is an experimental investigation on a remoulded expansive soil blended with varied amounts of calcium carbide residue (CCR) and fly ash. Compaction characteristics and unconfined compressive strength were studied. Useful results were obtained.
