Nine young Filipino- Germans who spoke German as their first language migrated to the Philippines together with their aging German fathers and middle-age Filipina mothers. While staying in their new home in Negros Island, they learn English and Cebuano as they assimilate with the locals. Self-awareness and language preferences of the three languages become considerations in the learning and forgetting a language. Henceforth, short term migrants who constantly speak their mother tongue in their homes continue to think in German during task performance, everyday interactions, racial and cultural events even when the situation calls them to listen, speak, read, and write in English or Cebuano. Long term migrants, on the other hand, have replaced German with English and Cebuano due to its limited use of their first language as well as their limited German contacts in the Philippines. This ability for both respondents to acquire and switch to their preferred language makes them hybrid speakers, occupying the third space of language, evidence of cross-linguistic influence.
