Synopsis

The role of matrices and wedges in Operative Dentistry is irreplaceable. Without matrices and wedges there is no other way to produce contacts and contours. No matrix band is ideal, almost all proximal cavities need a matrix and wedge depending on the requirements of the specific case. Wedges are used mostly in combination with matrices to prevent overhanging margins at the proximal area. Maladaptation of either the matrix band or the wedge also results in clinical failure such as overhanging margins, faulty contouring of the proximal wall and inadequate contact points.
