For Kenya to realise the benefits of rapid social and economic development, it is widely accepted that the country's Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system has to change. One of the most far reaching efforts to reform the TVET sector has been the introduction of the Competency Based Education and Training Framework (CBET) by the Government of Kenya. This book offers a set of simple guidelines for transforming the way technical skills training is done in Kenya by implementing the CBET Framework. Most of the ideas given here are based on the experience of CAP Youth Empowerment Institute (CAPYEI) a Kenyan NGO that works to provide employability skills training and support to help vulnerable young people. In doing this work, CAPYEI has developed and tested a model called Basic Employability Skills Training (BEST) that bears close similarity to the principles of CBET. In this book the authors describe the CAPYEI experience and explain how any technical skills provider can use the same principles of BEST and CBET to transform the results of their TVET programs and institutions.
