Synopsis

Heat exchangers are the most widely used process equipment found in industrial sector. Considering the present day global economic scenario, it has become mandatory to save the space, energy and material for minimizing the cost and physical size of a heat exchanger for a specified heat duty. Thus, heat transfer enhancement becomes an important aspect to ensure energy efficiency. One of the best methods to achieve this is the use of inserts, viz., longitudinal, twisted, wire coil, helical shaped inserts etc., in the existing heat exchanger or by customizing the thermophysical properties of the working fluids that results into heat transfer enhancement. The customization of thermophysical properties with the addition of nanoparticles to the base fluid has led to progressive research in the application of nanofluids for heat transfer enhancement in various applications.
