Synopsis

The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease. The health and well-being of individuals and communities provide the raison d'être for human development to the highest possible level, so health promotion involves persuasive and motivational educational action aimed at encouraging healthy behaviours in individuals, families and communities, acting on the mode, conditions and on all lifestyles. It is estimated that around 7 million people die annually from high blood pressure (25-30% of the adult population), of which a significant number are not treated and, of those who receive treatment, more than 50% do not have their blood pressure under control.) In Cuba, around 30% of adults suffer from it (in 2018, almost 2,300,000 dispensed cases) and less than 40% are controlled (BP less than 140/90 mmhg). Prevention of hypertension is a very important and low-cost measure.
