Synopsis
Une unité de soins intensifs (USI), également connue sous le nom d'unité de thérapie intensive ou unité de traitement intensif (UIT) ou unité de soins intensifs (CCU), est un département spécial d'un hôpital ou d'un établissement de soins de santé qui fournit des soins intensifs. Les unités de soins intensifs s'adressent aux patients atteints de maladies et de blessures graves ou potentiellement mortelles, qui nécessitent des soins constants, une surveillance étroite de l'équipement de survie et des médicaments afin de garantir des fonctions corporelles normales. Ils sont dotés de médecins, d'infirmières et de thérapeutes respiratoires hautement qualifiés qui se spécialisent dans les soins aux patients gravement malades. Les USI se distinguent également des services hospitaliers généraux par un ratio personnel/patient plus élevé et un accès à des ressources médicales avancées et à des équipements qui ne sont pas systématiquement disponibles ailleurs. Les affections courantes qui sont traitées au sein des USI comprennent le syndrome de détresse respiratoire aiguë, le choc septique et d'autres affections potentiellement mortelles. Les patients peuvent être référés directement d'un service d'urgence ou d'un service s'ils se détériorent rapidement, ou immédiatement après la chirurgie si la chirurgie est très invasive et que le patient présente un risque élevé de complications.
