Synopsis

The Data collection for this book was carried from December 2011 to December 2015. High demand for some locally important non-timber forest products has led to increased collection which may result in their overexploitation. The holistic approach was used, taking into consideration the socio-economic and environmental components of the study area. The objective was to assess the current management methods and supply chains of a number of NTFPs identified as ‘priority’ species by communities in the Lobeke landscape, through a socio-economic survey of actors who collect and trade in these products. A field inventory was carried out to evaluate the current stock of NTFP species. More specifically, we identified key (preferred) NTFPs of livelihood importance to communities and main actors involved in their supply chains, determine financial benefits that actors get, identify measures used by collectors to ensure continuous availability of NTFPs, and evaluate the effects of harvesting and forest degradation on the population structure of NTFP species, their densities in different forest types and regeneration. Data were collected using semi structured questionnaires.
