Synopsis

The burden of COPD is rising due to continued exposure to risk factors that trigger lung inflammation and repeated secondary infections thereby contributing to the third leading cause of death globally. More COPD deaths are attributed to poor socioeconomic status, changing age structure, life style modifications, tobacco usage in many forms, sedentary life style, faulty food intake and environmental pollutants.Underlying cardiovascular morbidity and mortality can be predicted by cardiac biomarkers like Troponin I thereby preventing some of the major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). There exists an heterogeneous etilogy and pathophysiologic interaction between COPD and cardiovascular homeostasis. However long term follow up has led to dramatic improvement in the life expectancy of COPD patients who have been under strict pharmacovigilance based on their Troponin I elevations.
