Ball bearings are one of the most commonly used machine elements. They are employed to permit rotary motions of, or about, shafts in simple commercial devices and also used in complex engineering mechanisms. Deep groove ball bearings are the most widely used bearings in industry and their market share is about 80% of industrial rolling element bearings. Generally structural steel as the bearing are used, which has less stiffness as compared to ceramic, and even the coefficient of thermal expansion of steel is high. Therefore, to overcome this problem, we have proposed a new concept of using a hybrid ball bearing i.e. ceramic balls with steel bearing races. The project determines the contact stress between the inner race and ball of single row deep groove ball bearing using analytical and finite element analysis and the work is also of interest to ball bearing manufacturers as the use of ceramics in the design of these components. It has many advantages over traditional bearing-steel materials. Low density and increased stiffness are the mechanical properties which gas-turbine and machine tool manufacturers are most likely to realize.
