Synopsis

This book assesses uranium concentrations in groundwater from various aquifers in the Khetri Copper Belt, Rajasthan, India, including alluvium, limestone, granite, schist, and quartzite. Results show significant variability, with some samples exceeding 115 µg/L—levels associated with increased cancer risk, especially in infants. Radiation dose estimates for different age groups and risk assessments indicate that prolonged consumption, particularly from schist aquifers, may lead to internal radiation exposure and chemical toxicity. A significant correlation was found between uranium and total dissolved solids in all aquifers except limestone. These findings highlight the urgent need for groundwater quality monitoring and management to mitigate health risks related to uranium contamination.
