The work is based on the assessment of evidence and recommendations from S3 guidelines regarding their relevance for determining blood sedimentation rate. The key guidelines were divided into categories and processed according to the research question. The aim of this paper is to use the available evidence on erythrocyte sedimentation rate to make a statement about its current necessity in laboratory diagnostics. In this paper, we would like to show that the analysis of erythrocyte sedimentation rate is playing an increasingly less important role in modern laboratory diagnostics. We aim to substantiate the stated hypothesis by researching the evidence. This will allow us to question the potentially ill-considered use of blood sedimentation rate as an analysis parameter. The guideline research was carried out using S3 guidelines from the online database ‘AWMF’.
