Synopsis

This study focuses on the formulation and evaluation of a herbal anti-dandruff shampoo using tamarind leaf extract and rice water extract as key natural ingredients. Dandruff, also known as pityriasis capitis, is a highly prevalent scalp disorder affecting more than half of the global population at some stage of life. It is characterized by excessive shedding of dead skin cells, itching, irritation, and sometimes redness. Although its exact cause is not fully understood, factors such as Malassezia fungal overgrowth, increased sebaceous gland activity, and immune responses play major roles. Conventional anti-dandruff shampoos typically contain synthetic agents like ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, and zinc pyrithione. While these are effective, they often cause side effects such as scalp dryness, irritation, hair damage, and environmental concerns. This has led to increasing interest in herbal formulations that are safer, eco-friendly, and provide additional nutritional benefits to the scalp and hair. The present study aims to develop a natural shampoo by utilizing the bioactive properties of Tamarindus indica leaves and rice water.
