Diabetes is one of the chronic diseases that causes numerous complications. Diabetic ulcers are one of the major problems of diabetic patients. As of 2024, the International Diabetes Federation estimates nearly 25% of the cases of diabetes are prone to ulcers causing a lack of treatment leading to amputation. One of the treatments for diabetic wounds involving a combination of carbomer with phytochemicals accelerates tissue regeneration, minimises the risk of infection, fastens recovery with reduced inflammation and fast healing parameters decreases antimicrobial activity, and moisture retention, and improves oxygen therapy through natural phytochemically-based treatment. This review is focused on various hydrogels loaded with phytochemicals of medicinal herbs and their preparations. They have been utilised for anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and wound-healing properties. This study explores the possibility of using different hydrogels with various crosslinkers embedded with phytochemicals in the advanced healing of diabetic wounds. It discusses the chances and properties of hydrogels in stabilized conditions and the release of phytochemicals within a wound.
