The distribution channels for locally grown rice in Togo are ineffective in ensuring that products meet consumer expectations in terms of price and quality; this has led to difficulties in selling the produce and, consequently, problems for producers in accessing markets. The current organisation of the rice marketing system involves wholesalers, retailers and service providers. Each stakeholder has a commercial strategy designed to maximise their own profits, which disadvantages the downstream link in the chain. Consequently, whilst the business is profitable for traders in the short term, it is not conducive to ensuring long-term production growth, as contracts are signed at prices that do not incentivise producers. To promote rice more effectively, industry professionals will need to organise themselves into a commercial enterprise in which transactions must go through a coordinating entrepreneur who will act as an interface between the market and the producers.
