Synopsis

This book is an integrated assessment and modelling of water quality of River Osun and its public health implication with Osogbo as a case study in Southwestern Nigeria. The river is used for domestic, agricultural, fishing and other socioeconomic activities but is becoming more polluted by anthropogenic pollution from waste disposal, domestic wastewater, agricultural runoff and washing and bathing. The study is based on field sampling, laboratory analysis, questionnaire survey, GIS techniques and HEC-RAS modelling, which are used to evaluate spatial and seasonal water quality variations. Physicochemical parameters such as temperature, pH, TDS, DO, BOD, NO2-, NO3- and PO3- were studied. GIS was used to map out the water quality patterns and HEC-RAS was used to simulate distribution of pollutants and river behaviour. The study also explored the correlation between water pollution in the river and the health issues in the community. The results reveal the environmental and public health hazards and the necessity for ongoing monitoring, sanitation, safe water supply, pollution control, public health education and integrated GIS and HEC-RAS modelling for sustainable river management.
