The work we have described-the subject of this book-has enabled us to synthesize [3]-dendralenes via the enyne-ene cross-metathesis reaction catalyzed by ruthenium complexes using a one-pot procedure. First, we optimized the ruthenium-catalyzed dehydration of propargyl alcohols 1-3. The enynes, products of the preceding reaction, were obtained with 100% conversion under well-defined conditions. Due to the volatility of the prepared enynes, we opted to develop a one-pot process to avoid product loss during the purification steps. The second step of this process involved reacting the enynes generated in situ with ethylene in the presence of a second-generation Hoveyda catalyst to obtain [3]-dendralenes. In another aspect of our work, and for menthone, we coupled two reactions: a dehydration reaction followed by an en-yne cross-metathesis reaction in the presence of various alkenes.
