Synopsis

This book presents the steady-state and dynamic performances of VSC based HVDC transmission system during step changes of the active, reactive powers and faults. In all cases the proposed system has been shown to provide fast and satisfactory dynamic responses of the proposed system. From the simulation, it can be obtained that the VSC-HVDC can fulfill fast and bidirectional power transfers. It can be obtained also during a three phase fault; the decreased voltage at the converter terminals strongly reduces the power flow by the DC link. When the fault is cleared, normal operation is recovered fast. From the result it can be concluded that the VSC HVDC link is better option over Thyristors based Classic HVDC seeing its performance and capability to operate at different conditions. Due to the advantages, with respect to dynamic voltage control and black start capability, the VSC HVDC transmission is capable to supply remote locations (islands) using submarine cables, without any need of expensive local generation. The ability to control reactive power, as well as the AC voltage, makes VSC HVDC very suitable for transmitting power from off shore wind farms to the mainland AC grid.
