Synopsis

This research examines the phenotypic relationship between body weight and morphometric traits of goats in Kano State, Nigeria. It provides an assessment of body weight and key body measurements, including body length, height at withers, chest girth, heart girth, rump height, and other conformation traits, with emphasis on their usefulness in predicting body weight. The study evaluates variations among goats and determines the strength of associations between body weight and morphometric measurements using appropriate statistical techniques. Regression models are used to identify reliable measurements for estimating body weight where weighing facilities are unavailable. The findings provide practical information for farmers, livestock extension personnel, researchers, students, and animal breeders. The research also highlights the importance of morphometric characterization in selection, breeding, management, and improvement of indigenous goat populations. It contributes to the development of simple and cost-effective approaches for body weight estimation and supports sustainable goat production and genetic improvement in Kano, Nigeria.
