Synopsis

This study was conducted in the main citrus-growing regions of Tunisia to assess pesticide residues in oranges. The results showed that of the 86 whole orange samples analyzed, 57% were contaminated with active ingredients, with 38% of cases exceeding the Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) set by the European Union for three active ingredients: malathion, methidathion, and dimethoate. Analyses of different parts of the oranges-namely the epicarp and the pulp-revealed lower contamination levels in the pulp compared to the peel, demonstrating that peeled oranges pose less of a health risk to consumers. Furthermore, the calculation of health and environmental risk indices (IRS and IRE), based on the Canadian model (IRPeQ), showed that the Success Appât® formulation appears to be the product posing the lowest health risk. Similarly, Aliette express® is considered one of the products posing the lowest risks to health and the environment.
