Synopsis

HIV counseling and voluntary testing constitute an effective strategy at the intersection of prevention and care for people living with HIV. Burkina Faso, a least developed country, is experiencing a generalized epidemic (2% in 2006). Efforts to promote VCT have reached a turning point since 2003 with the creation of the Program to Support Civil Society and Community Organizations (PAMAC). The objective of this study is to contribute to improving these efforts. This study is based on data from 2006 collected by PAMAC and on an analysis of the existing literature. Despite the expansion of the centers, coverage remains insufficient and distribution is uneven. In 2006, 199,776 people were screened, 97.2% of whom were adults: routine screening (39%), the "World AIDS Day" campaign (35%), and the school and university campaign (26%). The HIV prevalence rate is 4.3%. Women account for 65% of adults tested at integrated CCDVs. It is necessary to continue expanding the CCDVs. Counseling and testing initiated by healthcare providers at health facilities would be an opportunity to increase efficiency. However, the challenges to its implementation are significant.
