Synopsis

This thesis examines the work of psychologists and social workers in the field of addiction. Following an introductory clarification of the terms 'addiction' and 'addiction work', it provides an overview of Austrian and European addiction support services and their legal frameworks, as well as a description of the professions of psychology and social work, including their history, professional regulations and training, and the requirements and role dynamics involved in individual support. A survey conducted in an addiction support service using problem-oriented interviews revealed that multi-professional collaboration appears to be a prerequisite for successful individual psychosocial support. It is only through showing appreciation and understanding towards clients, as well as towards colleagues from other professions, that those affected can be offered the highest level of support.
