Synopsis

Ancient Chinese Fables is compiled by Bei Dazhong: Fables, as literary works, make use of a kind of metaphor story to illustrate truth, and they are mostly based on short structure, distinctive image, exaggeration and imagination artistic techniques to clarify some kind of truth, or satirize some kind of social phenomenon. The most basic feature of fables is theme metaphor. In fables, A is always metaphorized into B, the shallow into the deep, the near into the far, the small into the big, and the ancient into today. In short, the complex and profound truth is metaphorized into the plain and simple story. For example, the well-known story of ""Waiting Every Day Under the Tree, in the Hope that a Hare Would Kill Itself by Crashing into a Tree Trunk"" does not tell readers what approaches should be taken to catch a hare, and such a plain and simple story is utilized to suggest an universal and abstract truth: If the contingency of the development of things is considered as the inevitability, and wholeheartedly it is hoped that the same contingency would appear, and inevitably nothing would be achieved. In some ironic fables, their morals do not seem to be reflected superficially, such as ""Chengyang Nu"" in Collection of Song Lians Essays (see the book for the story of ""Pedantic Scholar Conducted Fire-fighting""). This story is to satirize those people who are particular about courtesy and pomp with a bookworm style even at the critical moment. If we think about the story further, we may feel that there are some more profound meaning in the story. So, fables contain meanings.
