Marks of Beasts describes the common life of a soviet troop in Afghanistan. The protagonist Cherepaha is a gunner, and soldiers in his troop are generally divided into four positions. The veterans are of the highest position, and they often bully others; while the new recruits, of the lowest position, do the dirtiest chores such as cleaning toilets every day, and clean the veterans' dishes and clothes. Any resistance from the new recruits would incur a terrible beating. On one duty, Cherepaha shot his good friend who wanted to escape, and since then Cherepaha transformed into a ""beast"". Cherepaha learnt to bully the new recruits, take drugs, intimidate civilians and shoot prisoners. On his way back to home country for demobilization, Cherepaha encountered the new recruits in taking place of the veterans. A new round of nightmare in Afghanistan is about to appear...
