This book is the debut work of Chinese-Canadian author Deng Minling, originally titled "Simple Recipes." The seven short stories tell the stories of seven immigrant families that are gradually developing cracks due to generational differences, cultural divides, and conflicting values: a young woman keeps going back in time to trace several key moments when her family of origin lost faith and fell apart; two sisters crouch outside their former house in the hope that the Two sisters squat outside their former house, hoping their long-lost mother will reappear; a daughter remembers the moment her admiration for her father collapsed: his ability to create delicious wonders with simple recipes, but his inability to do the same with his rebellious teenage son, escalates an argument into violent punishment. ...... This book won four awards in Canada for its maturity beyond the age of the author, and for the simplicity and sophistication of its writing. The book has won four Canadian literary awards, made it to the final round of the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best Debut Novel, and was even praised by Nobel Prize winner Alice Munro.
