Synopsis
美国当代社会理论家伊曼纽尔，沃勒斯坦在分析和批评19世纪社会科学范式的局限性时更以嘲讽的口吻说，在社会科学中占有主导地位的方法论最了不起的成就之一就是在分析过程中删除了时空概念。他认为，在以往的社会理论中，时空被看做一种自然的常态、一种外生变量，而并非连续性的社会创造。然而，事实上，"时空"不仅是纯内生变量而且还是我们理解社会结构和历史变迁的关键所在。
社会科学研究中之所以存在这种严重的理论和方法论缺失，有理论本身和社会现实两方面的原因。从理论的角度看，这可以说是牛顿经典时空观和康德虚空的时空范畴在社会思想中的后遗症，但是，与此同时，也是社会科学中普遍主义理论模式和实证主义方法论固有的弊端。古典社会学尽管有着近代社会的产生和发育作为现实的基础，并从生物学等新的自然科学理论中引入了"进化""节奏""规律"和"发展"等概念，但是，由于物理学主义或理性主义（笛卡儿主义）的影响，总是把社会看做一个超历史的、统一的过程，醉心于揭示"社会实体"中类似自然界的"规律"，恰恰忘记了社会区别于自然的时空的复杂性。
