The book records the history from the formation of Three Kingdoms to the unification of Western Jin Dynasty, mainly focusing on the rise and fall of three dynasties of Wei, Shu and Wu. It includes sixty-five volumes: thirty of History of Wei, twenty of History of Wu and fifteen of History of Shu. The book keeps a record of sixty years of history from the beginning of Emperor Wen of Wei Dynasty ( the first year of Huang Chu, 220 A.D) to the beginning Emperor of Wu of Jin Dynasty ( the first year of Tai Kang, 280 A.D). It was highly praised in history due to the characteristics of vivid narration, concise language and proper summarization and is a valuable material for the later generations to study the history of the three countries.
