A reprint of private print dating from 1939, a combined work of Milada Souckova (1899-1983) and her husband Zdenek Rykr (1900-1940). Significant poetic collection of Milada Souckova, illustrated with colourful illustrations by Zdenek Rykr. These linocut illustrations are among the last works of Zdenek Rykr (before his suicide due to fear of the Gestapo). Zdenek Rykr is an eminent solitary artist belonging to the Czech interwar avant-garde. He is famous not only for his free paintings but also for his work in the advertising industry (for the Orion chocolate company for example). The graphics to the book were created together with the poems and question the current problems of human society; in terms of time and topic they are close to Rykr's existential drawings of women in baths. The writer Milada Souckova was part of the cultural scene of Czech interwar avant-garde; she also co-worked with the Prague linguistic circle; after the war she emigrated to the USA. “The Speaking Zone” is one of the best pieces of Czech poetry of the 20th Century. This extensive work comments on the pathetic anxieties of the time, asks for the reasons for the big spiritual crisis in the age of reason and finds shelter in language; at the same time critically evaluates the poetic practices of avant-garde. The book contains six big (15 x 30 cm) full page multicoloured illustrations + two-coloured cover by Zdenek Rykr. The book has an original typographic layout. The table of contents looks like a belt stretching without any indentations from the upper to the down margin, the text – typed in sans serif typeface – is divided by rows of squares. The book is “bound” with wire spiral. Reprint published by PROSTOR, Prague, 2006. Soft cover, bound with wire spiral, 24 x 30 cm, 32 pages. Condition: new.
