Paperback. Etat : Good. 349 pages. name ffep, Contemporary Islamic revivalism is a multi-dimensional and multi-faceted phen omenon. This book explores this phenomenon through an ethnographic study of the worldâs largest Islamic revivalist movement, the TablighJamaâat (? ?Convey [message of Islam]â Group). The basic contention of the b ook is that contemporary Islamic revivalism is a defensive reaction to the crisi s of modernity, yet it is neither anti-modernity nor does it seek modernityâ? ?s destruction. Rather, it highlights thatMuslims are in a crisis. They face the threat of losing their faith and identity in modernity, because according t o the revivalist Muslims, the âtrueâ Islamic practice no longer consti tutes the foundation of everyday Muslimliving. To preclude this from reachin g a point of no return, Islamic revivalist movements like the Tabligh Jamaâ at are engaged in encouraging Muslims to return to the âtrueâ teaching s of Islam, and restoring the Islamic glorythat once was the envy of the wor ld. This volume highlights the veritable âsectarianâ intensity with wh ich Tablighis undertake this restorative work.About the AuthorDr J an A. Ali is a sociologist of Religion.
