The Maldive Islands An Account Of The Physical Features, Climate, History, Inhabitants, Productions, And Trade [Hardcover] - Couverture rigide

Hardcover. Etat : New. Language: English. About the Book :-The author has attempted in the present Memoir to do some justice to a people little known and less regarded. Probably but very few persons have more than a hazy notion that the Mldive group lies somewhere in Eastern seas, or would be able to fix its position at all approximately. The worse than ignorance occasionally displayed even by would be instructors is astounding. As late as 1811 a standard treatise on Geography gravely asserted that these Islands were 'governed by a chief called Atoll', and were inhabited by 'some Mahomedans'! The notices regarding the Mldive Islands are so few and far between, so dispersed up and down scarce works, mostly travels, difficult of reference, that it is hoped an effort to collect and bring into one focus the scattered rays of information on the subject may serve some useful purpose. A report of the work originally published in 1883. The accompanying maps and diagram have been prepared in the Surveyor-General's Office, Colombo. About the Author :-Harry Charles Purvis Bell, CCS, more often known as HCP Bell, was a British civil servant and the first Commissioner of Archaeology in Ceylon. Appointed an official archaeologist, in July 1890 the Governor of Ceylon, Sir Arthur Gordon, appointed Bell as the first Archaeological Commissioner and Head of the Archaeological Survey of Ceylon. He carried out many excavations in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) for the Archaeological Survey during an appointment running from 1890 to 1912 and claimed to dig treasures hidden in the Sigiriya and sent to England. After retirement, he also investigated the archaeology and epigraphy of the Maldives, where he had been earlier in his life and studied the linguistics of the Maldivian language. Bell had developed a good friendship with the king of the Maldives, who put his own royal schooner Fath-ul-Majid at his disposition to carry out archaeological research in certain atolls south of Mal.
