Notable for his military service, he participated in various campaigns, earning medals and promotions, ultimately reaching the rank of Lieutenant General. His affinity for Lepcha culture led him to study and document the Lepcha language. He published "A Grammar of the Róng (Lepcha) Language" in 1876. Known as ‘Lepcha Mad,’ he immersed himself in Lepcha life, residing in remote areas. General Mainwaring died in Bengal in 1893, leaving behind valuable linguistic contributions.
