Dr. D. R.Arora, M.D., Ph.D., M.N.A.M.S., Prof. & Head, Department of Microbiology, Maharaja Agarsen Medical College, Agroha, Hisar (India); Lead Assessor, Faculty Member and Member Technical Committee, National Accreditation Board for Testing & Calibration Laboratories (NABL), New Delhi (India); Assessor, National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH), New Delhi (India); formerly Prof. & Head, Department of Microbiology, PGIMS, Rohtak (India) has 37 years of teaching experience in microbiology including parasitology to medical, dental and nursing undergraduate and postgraduate students. Besides conducting and supervising research in microbiology, he has published 150 research articles in several national and international journals of repute. The results of his research on malaria parasites and Klebsiellapneumoniae have been cited in World Health Organization WHO/MAL/83. 10003 and Topley and Wilson s Microbiology and Microbial Infections, Vol. 2, 9th ed., 1998, respectively. He has supervised a number ofPG students of Ph.D., M.D. and M.S. In appreciation of outstanding research carried out by him in India on bacteriocins of Klebsiella pneumoniae, he was awarded Smt Kunti Mehrotra Award of Indian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists in 1983. In recognition of significant contribution for the advancement of medical sciences, he was elected Member of National Academy of Medical Sciences (India) in 1985. He has been a Visiting Professor in University of Mauritius in 1989. He was awarded WHO fellowship on Laboratory Aspects of HI V/AIDS and STD at Community Health Surveillance and Laboratories Administration, Baltimore, Maryland (USA) in 1992. He was honoured by Indian Medical Association, Kaithal, (Haryana) on the eve of Doctors Day on 01.07.1999. He has been examiner for B.D.S., M.B.B.S., M.D., D.N.B. and Ph.D. microbiology of a number of universities.

The third edition of Textbook of Microbiology has been thoroughly updated to include the latest developments including pathogenesis, laboratory diagnosis and treatment. Brief description of avian influenza virus and severe acute respiratory syndrome has been given in chapters on Orthomyxoviridae and Caliciviridae respectively. In the chapter on hospital-associated infections, antibiotic policy and disinfection policy have been added. The text is presented in a simple and lucid manner. All figures are now computer-drawn and in different colours which makes the book colourful and the reader can have a better understanding. Key facts at the end of each chapter are another addition.
